Steven A. Thorne is a retired partner of Deloitte Tax LLP and former head of Deloitte’s Family Wealth Planning and Family Office practices in the Chicago office. Steve's 38-year career in public accounting was spent dealing with high net worth families, family offices and family owned and closely-held businesses. His clients include a wide range of very wealthy families and large closely-held businesses in various industries.
Steve is a widely recognized authority on family offices, wealth planning, business succession and private aviation and is a frequent speaker on these topics. He has been quoted and published in numerous local and national publications, including The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Business Week, Forbes, Crain's, the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times. Steve has made guest appearances on WTTW’s Chicago Tonight, MSNBC, and Business Talk Radio.
Steve is the founder and leader of Deloitte’s National Private Aviation Practice, a niche consulting practice that assists corporations and wealthy families in evaluating available options in private air travel, as well as assisting in the structuring and establishment of flight departments and helping clients navigate the numerous IRS and FAA considerations in private aviation.
Steve has been a member of the Estate, Gift and Trust Tax Technical Resource Panel (TRP) of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) since 1999 and served as Chairman from 2004 until 2007. The TRP acts as the primary representative of the AICPA before Congress, Treasury and the IRS on legislative and regulatory matters in the Estate and Gift tax area.
Steve was also a member of Deloitte Tax LLP’s National Estate and Gift Tax Specialty Team. The National Specialty Team is a select group of highly qualified and experienced individuals who specialize in multigenerational planning for high net worth families.
Steve has his BA from DePauw University and his MBA from the University of Michigan.
